ARCHITETTURA E MESTIERE

Lecture at Ming Chuan University Taoyuan

The story of the construction of a building is seen as an opportunity to speak to students about architecture as a profession that concerns processes, not just objects, of indeterminacy, change, adaptability, learning, and creativity, as understood by Cedric Price.

The Fun Palace as an archetype of contemporary practice: the ability to engage with complexity, integrate different demands, and multiple layers of meaning, organizing them into a coherent and unified system.

The narrative is divided into three chapters:

  • The relationship with the context understood as the ability to read clues and the cynical negotiation between the compositional desire and the need to built a manufact that will be part of the city. The project as a contribution to the construction of the urban environment

  • The opportunity: the possibility of using a project as a tool for research, considering the process not simply as a set of responses to requests or solutions to problems, but as an occasion to explore, experiment, and conduct research through the project itself

  • The importance of the coherence of details, both among themselves and with the general concept, and the tenacity to keep together all the factors involved in a construction process without betraying the promise made in the preliminary phases
